QA Reef vs MuukTest
A vendor’s QA team on their platform, against a platform with no vendor team. Both are fair answers to different problems.
Facts about MuukTest were read from muuktest.com on 30 August 2026 and are described as their published material states them — check the current version before you buy. QA Reef is not affiliated with MuukTest; the name is used here only to identify the product being compared.
The short version
MuukTest in one line
A managed QA function. Their published material describes their own QA engineers designing, running and maintaining your automated suites on their platform, toward a stated coverage target.
QA Reef in one line
An open-core QA agent you deploy like a Vercel project: record or describe a flow, get a deterministic Playwright spec, run it on your hardware or ours, and get PASS, FAIL, or UNMEASURED back.
MuukTest is staffing plus a platform; QA Reef is a platform with no staffing. Their pages say the scripts they build are yours, which is a genuinely fair position — the difference is that we hand you the engine too, and you keep running it after the engagement.
Side by side
| QA Reef | MuukTest | |
|---|---|---|
| Open source | Open core. The qareef CLI is Apache-2.0. The automation core under packages/core is MIT; extraction to a public repo is in progress. The generated tests are plain Playwright you already own. |
The platform is not open source. Their GitHub organisation publishes MIT-licensed CI helpers (a CircleCI orb, executor scripts) — integration tooling, not the product. |
| Self-host | Yes. Node 22 + Playwright + a model key on your own machines, or hosted by us. Per-workspace data roots either way. | Not stated on their site. Not published |
| Pricing model | Not published — pre-launch. Self-hosted you pay only for your own model calls, each logged with its model id and cost. A local-model backend makes that $0. | Not published. Their pricing page names two tiers — Automation Starter and Full Service QA, described around 80% and 95% coverage targets — and routes to a scoping session for an outcome-based price. No figures. |
| Who writes the tests | You do — by recording in a hosted browser, or by giving the agent a goal. Deterministic codegen writes the Playwright spec; the model only proposes a title and assertions, stamped decided_by. |
Their engineers. Their how-it-works page says their experts build the scripts with Playwright, Selenium and Appium, and that you own the resulting scripts. |
| How flakiness is handled | A heal ladder: wait-and-retry → recorded alternates → DOM heuristic → model proposal → OCR → coordinates. Every heal must clear a same-control gate. Model heals are quarantined for human review, never auto-promoted. A coordinate click, or a run that healed more than 20% of its steps, returns UNMEASURED rather than a pass. | Their site cites self-healing and “smart locators”; no mechanism is published. In practice the human team absorbs maintenance. |
| Legacy / canvas UIs | Yes. The operator reads the screen with Apple Vision OCR or a vision model, so canvas and legacy UIs with no stable locators are still driveable. | Not mentioned. Not published |
| CI integration | npx qareef CLI with real exit codes, a GitHub Action, and a Vercel Deployment Check that blocks a promote. |
Generic CI/CD language on the site; a CircleCI orb exists in their public GitHub org. |
| Data ownership | Self-hosted: flows, screenshots, traces and the model-call ledger never leave your disk. Hosted: per-workspace data root, API tokens hashed at rest. | Runs on their platform. Their material states the scripts they produce are yours. |
Choose MuukTest if…
- You have no QA engineers and are not going to hire any this year.
- You want a committed ramp to a coverage number rather than a tool licence.
- You need native mobile and API coverage in the same engagement.
- You would rather buy an outcome than own a pipeline.
Choose QA Reef if…
- You have engineers and want leverage, not a vendor team.
- You need the tests running inside your network on your own hardware.
- You want a price you can compute in advance from your own model spend.
- Your app has canvas or legacy surfaces that need screen reading, not locators.
Where QA Reef falls short
We do not staff anything. If your bottleneck is people rather than tooling, MuukTest solves your actual problem and we do not.
Sitewide caveats, on every page: QA Reef is pre-launch. No customers, no case studies, no published price, no SOC 2 report. Mobile (native app) testing is not supported. There is no managed human-QA service.
Questions
What does MuukTest cost?
Not published. Their pricing page describes outcome-based pricing scoped in a call, with two named tiers and no figures. Anyone quoting you a MuukTest number off a comparison site is guessing.
Do I own the tests MuukTest writes?
Their own how-it-works page says the scripts are yours and frames it as no lock-in. Confirm what that means for the platform-side glue before you sign.
Could I use both?
Reasonably, yes. A managed team can carry broad regression coverage while QA Reef holds the surfaces that need screen reading or must run inside your network.
Does QA Reef offer a managed service?
No. QA Reef is pre-launch software with no services arm.
